Early diagnosis of fetal defects

Spectrum of defects

A wide range of major fetal abnormalities can be diagnosed at the 11-13 weeks scan.

Some of these abnormalities are associated with increased NT:

  • Major cardiac defects
  • Diaphragmatic hernia
  • Exomphalos
  • Megacystis
  • Body stalk anomaly
  • Skeletal abnormalities

In other abnormalities fetal NT is usually normal:

  • Acrania / anencephaly
  • Ventriculomegaly
  • Holoprosencephaly
  • Spina bifida
  • Gastroschisis
