Background to preeclampsia

Prevalence

PE develops in 2-5% of pregnancies. The rate depends on the demographic characteristics of the population under investigation. For example in Black women the rate is 2-3 times higher than in White women.

In one third of the cases the condition leads to delivery at <37 weeks’ gestation (preterm PE) and in two thirds delivery occurs at ≥37 weeks (term PE)
